“Mir ist zu Licht zum Schlafen” (Too Bright To Sleep) is a solo exhibition by Karen Dolev, curated by Mara Sporn, marking the opening of a new city-center art space by Quartier am Hafen. The exhibition presents a new series of soft pastel works on paper. Drawing from German Romanticism, the works engage with the chromatic palettes of the period, translating them into fields of light and color. This gesture can also be perceived as a way of calibrating within a new environment, borrowing the palettes of other painters as a point of departure. Developed during a residency in Cologne, the works respond to the surrounding landscape and its atmospheric conditions, oscillating between environmental observation and psychological space.
Karen Dolev (b. 1994) is a visual artist based in Tel Aviv-Jaffa. She studied at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts (Jerusalem, 2017) and Master of Fine Arts (Tel Aviv, 2023). In 2016, she participated in an exchange program at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Dolev’s work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions at museums and galleries. She has received grants from the Outset Contemporary Art Fund Israel, the Mifal HaPais Council for Culture and Arts, and the Rabinovich Foundation for the Arts. Her work is included in the collection of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, as well as in private collections in Israel and abroad.
The exhibition takes place as part of her residency by the Kunststiftung NRW at Quartier am Hafen. Check out her instagram takeover @quartieresidents.
